wife and mom
I have expressed myself with art ever since I can remember. From painting, acting, music, writing, and photography. I still practice many forms of art, but photography came to me out of the blue and flows so naturally for me. It was my freshman year of college five years ago when I had reached out to a photographer about taking lessons from her, simply because I was just curious. I borrowed her backup camera because I didn’t even own one! Those few lessons led me to save up for a camera kit and I started interning with her. I started by observing photoshoots, and then I second shot a lot of weddings for her through college, while occasionally doing my own sessions for people who asked.
Currently, after graduating with a sociology degree and business minor, getting married, and having a baby on the way, I have been focusing fully on my own photography business. I will still second shoot for some other photographers, but have done several solo weddings. I learned from the photographer I worked with how to stand out in a sea of “wanna be photographers” and it really boils down to consistency in your brand. I have done everything from maternity, newborn, family, engagements, weddings, seniors, retail, etc. I just love being around people, connecting with them, and helping draw out their true selves, so that I can capture their beauty.
Cedar & Palm, the name of my business, specializes in a style of nostalgic photojournalism. I seek to tell your story in a beautiful and poetic way that strikes a chord deep in your heart. I hope to use my images to reveal my clients true and beautiful life, while truly connecting with them in a valued and trusting relationship. I deeply value and honor the fact that I get to be invited into so many peoples lives, in a way that is vulnerable and raw. In my opinion, these are essential qualities in a photo that represent the true reality of people and the lives they live.
My hopes and dreams for the future of my business, are honestly just for it to be able to support and include my family, and to bring people into a closer relationship with Jesus through their interactions with me and their photos.
For me, faith is truly the foundation of anything. I started with only faith, not even owning a camera (lol). I find that when my eyes are on the Lord and what opportunities he gives me, instead of on personal success or chasing opportunities, is when I am healthiest with my work and when it truly thrives.
1) If you weren’t doing what you do now, what would be your dream job?
If I wasn’t doing this job, I would hope to be painting or writing.
2) What’s your girl boss tip for success?
To me, the biggest challenge facing artists today is finding confidence in your originality and doing that consistently when you pursue art as a business. It is so easy to be discouraged by trendy, streamlined aesthetics and products and try to ride their wave in fear of not being seen otherwise. But the opposite is true. The more artists who stand loud and proud in their unique expression, the more people will value them and their work, and appreciate the beauty that makes a piece of art one of a kind. Because it is always more than the art, it is a piece of the artist. Instead of a manufactured item that a million other people have in their home, or someone trying to make a name for themselves quickly and poorly because of money, followers, or fads.
3) Favorite quote or bible verse?
The verse that inspired the name of my company is all of Psalm 92, but specifically Psalm 92:12-15 “The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, “The Lord is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.”
